I think babies only look this cuddly when they are firstborn. Here is a newborn snuggled up in the blankets and sleeping peacefully. Time passes so quickly from this early age so I wanted to paint this first moment of the beginning of a new life.

Skin tones and shading on faces are one of my biggest challenges. I need to be so subtle with base pigment and layers of glaze to create the image I want. I was really pleased this time that I could use brushstrokes to suggest highlights and tone. – Donald Ryker

The woven basket is created with many shades of brown and glaze. The deep blues and browns create a peaceful feeling.
