Eagles

Three eagles on driftwood with ocean, forest, and snow covered mountains in the background. Three panels. Mountain. Blue, green, neutrals. Large Painting by artist Donald Ryker in textured expressionist impressionist art style with unique impasto glaze technique.

This work is about camaraderie, loyalty and trust. Each bird could live independently but they choose to spend this time together. In this scene three eagles come to rest on driftwood in Alaska with snow covered mountains and the ocean in the background.

I chose to paint this piece on three large canvases so I could show the detail of these eagles interacting in a group as well as featuring the setting they are in. I wanted these background elements to have their own presence without overshadowing the eagles in the foreground. I use saturated colors with glaze layers throughout this painting. I really enjoyed creating the stump and roots of the fallen tree with free use of many colors of brown, grey, purple, blue and orange.

The ocean, forest, mountains, and sky, remind me of the lake where I spend time most summers. I would love to visit a spot like this in nature. —Donald Ryker
