A somber lion with light and dark main prowls through the falling snow. Mountain. Yellow, Purple, Blue. Large Painting by artist Donald Ryker in textured expressionist impressionist art style with unique impasto glaze technique.
Lions have such a presence. I really like painting them and showing their power and peacefulness. Those two qualities seem at odds with each other so it’s very intriguing to paint. This fellow is in motion, walking through the snow. I can imagine his muffled footsteps. His gaze is intently focused on his destination. I painted the base color with a range from yellow to blue that took me through many shades of green. Then I glazed with yellows, oranges, purples, and blues. The dark main was in shades of red and orange, then glazed with blues and purples. I chose a blue background color to reflect the icy blue of snow. You can see the original on display in the collectors home. Doesn’t it look great in that setting? Enjoy. – Donald Ryker
